Teaching obligations for academic employees at Bonn University

Below we have compiled a brief overview of the teaching commitments of the respective groups of lecturers represented by the Staff Council of Academic Employees. This is based on the Ordinance on Teaching Commitments at Universities and Universities of Applied Sciences (Lehrverpflichtungsverordnung - LVV). If you require further information, please contact us directly.

Research assistants (WHKs) have no teaching obligations.

Part-time lecturers have a correspondingly lower teaching obligation (based on the percentage of part-time employment).

The teaching obligations of severely disabled lecturers with a degree of disability of 50, 70 or 90% can be reduced by 12, 18 or 25% respectively upon application.

Under-utilisation of teaching duties is permitted up to half, over-utilisation up to twice the individual teaching duties. Compensation must be made within the following three academic years, but at the latest by the end of the employment relationship. Overruns shall lapse if their total amount exceeds twice the individual teaching commitment or if they are not compensated by the end of the employment relationship.

How classes count against your teaching commitments:

  • Lectures, tutorials, seminars, colloquia and revision courses. Internships can be fully recognised, but this only applies to the tiered study structure (Bachelor/Master).
  • Excursions count for three tenths of the teaching load; a maximum of ten teaching hours per day is possible.
  • The supervision of final theses and comparable student research projects is recognised up to a maximum of three course hours, taking into account the necessary workload.
  • Other courses are counted as half of the teaching load. If the nature of the course does not require constant supervision of the students, the course shall count for three tenths of the teaching commitment.
  • If there is more than one lecturer teaching a class, the teaching-hour total will, with few exceptions, be divided between the lecturers.
  • Lecturers are obliged to provide the dean with evidence of the courses they have actually taught at the end of the lecture period.
